How We Were the First to Find the Boston Dead Drop.

Ok I was going to post this yesterday but… Ended up not happening. Non the less here is the story about how Matt Lebrun and I found the dead drop that lee brimelow dropped in Boston.

It was about 10:30 in the morning and I had already been at work for an hour and a half just messing around in twitter and such at the time. Matt got on and was super stoked and proceeded to send me a Link to your post about the dead drop in Boston. We had watched the San Francisco dead drop unfold a week ago and we really wanted talked about how we really wanted to partake in it if you ever did it in Boston, so now was our chance.

At first I didn’t spend to much time on it because I was at work and also I had to go out on-site to set up a computer on a network for this business, I work a Computer Tech place in a Small Town where I work on computers and also handle all the Web Design/Graphic Design/Video Editing or whatever tech problem that anyone in this little town comes up with. Well we figured that It had to deal with the book cause obviously the ISDN number from amazon was the sequence of letters turned into there respected numerical value. The Australian guy in the comments helped us along with that one haha.

Matt tried going to his library to try and decode the sequence of numbers with no luck and had to leave without really thinking it through, cause he has no car and his ride needed to leave. I Looked up on my local Library’s site to see if they had the book in, and they did. Luckily the Library is right next door to my work so I clocked out and ran over there real quick all the time keeping in touch with Matt on all that was going on. I got to the Library and sat down with A Beautiful Mind to start the decoding. I proceeded to try 3 Different ways cause at first it really wasn’t making much since:

1. page-paragraph-word
2. page-word-letter
3. page-line-word

The Last one made sense but at the time I was taking photos of the pages and uploading them to Facebook for Matt to see as well, so it didn’t really click at first. Then I thought of the letters equaling numbers DUH! haha. I used page-line-word and the first letter in that word would equal a number and I imediatly came out with 42 40.975, 71 15.490. I texted it to Matt and told him to get going! I went back to work and punched in the numbers into Google, as did Matt and luckily he double checked my work on page 163 which I had uploaded to facebook and found that I had put a 4 instead of a 2 on the first coordinate… Ooops! Non the less we got it fixed (42 20.975*) and he barrowed his moms car and proceeded to drive an hour to the location.

When He got there he called me up so that I could give him some directions and help on finding it. He said that he saw some people out there and he didnt know weather they were just walking dogs or looking for the drop. I advised him to hurry up! haha. As I was talking to him an Intern and my Manager were standing there looking at the blog post and we started looking closely at the photo for more clues and figure out then that it was a red square nailed to a tree! That helped Matt out a ton cause now he had something to really look for! I got off the phone with cause we were running up the minutes! Moments later he called me back to check and see if he was on the right trail and with a combination of street view and some input he was giving me I, we figured he was on the right trail and just had to go down to the end and to the right/north. Then we hung up again.

After a few moments he called back and said he found it! his hands were freezing and he was getting the hell out of there! He drove down a couple exits and pulled over and unwrapped it…. IT WAS CS4 MASTER COLLECTION!! We were wicked stoked on the find and I immediately emailed you the secret message!! This was at about 4:57pm when he had finally found it and opened it!

And thats the story… Hope you Enjoyed it! Leave comments/share!

The photos below are of Matt with CS4 and my code breaking sheet!
